Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Little Reading Wins another reading programme?
Not in the traditional sense. Little Reading Wins isn’t designed to replace your school’s existing reading scheme, phonics programme or reading curriculum. Instead, it sits alongside what you already do to help children build positive reading habits and attitudes.
- Does Little Reading Wins replace phonics or reading teaching?
No. Little Reading Wins is not a phonics programme and does not replace high-quality reading instruction. It is designed to complement the work schools are already doing by supporting children’s motivation, confidence and attitudes towards reading.
- Can schools use Little Reading Wins alongside their existing reading scheme?
Yes. Little Reading Wins is designed to work alongside your school’s existing books, reading scheme and approach. You don’t need to abandon the systems you already have in place.
- What if we already send home reading challenges or book lists?
Little Reading Wins can work alongside them. If your school already sends home reading activities, book recommendations or reading challenges, you can continue doing that. Little Reading Wins simply gives you another way to encourage participation, celebrate progress and keep families connected with reading.
- My child already has a school reading book. Why do they need this?
Because reading isn’t just about getting through the book. A child might be perfectly capable of decoding the words but still say, “I don’t like reading.” Little Reading Wins focuses on the relationship a child has with reading — helping them find enjoyment, confidence and motivation alongside their existing reading practice.
- My child hates reading. Won’t they just refuse to use this too?
That’s exactly why Little Reading Wins was created. There isn’t another list of books that children have to read or another target they have to reach. The aim is to remove some of the pressure and help children experience small, positive reading moments. The focus is on celebrating progress rather than making children feel like they’re failing at reading.
- Isn’t this just more screen time?
No! Little Reading Wins uses a screen for parent accounts to encourage more reading away from the screen. The app is not intended for children to sit scrolling for long periods. It provides parents with short, purposeful prompts, challenges, book recommendations and opportunities to record reading that they can complete with their child. The goal is to get children reading, talking about books and engaging with stories — not spending lots of time on an app.
- Can teachers log reading for children?
Yes. Teachers can log reading from their side of the platform, making it easier to keep reading records up to date without relying entirely on children or parents to remember to log them. The digital aspect of the app means that teachers no longer have to chase for paper reading records to be completed or handed in. Teachers can also access Little Reading Wins from their schol desktop, making it quick, easy and efficient to long reading during the school day.
- Can two parents or carers access the same child’s account?
Yes. When using the schools version of Little Reading Wins, up to 2 parent/carer can access the same child’s profile, making it easier for families to share responsibility for recording and celebrating reading.
- Can siblings be added to the same parent account?
Yes. When using the school version of Little Reading Wins, families with more than one child can have siblings linked to the same parent profile, so parents don’t need to manage completely separate accounts for each child.
- Is Little Reading Wins suitable for children who are already enthusiastic readers?
Absolutely. While Little Reading Wins is particularly valuable for reluctant readers, enthusiastic readers can also use it to discover new books, try different types of reading and reflect on their reading experiences.
- Is Little Reading Wins suitable for children with additional needs?
Little Reading Wins has been designed to be flexible and low-pressure, which can make it useful for children who find reading particularly challenging. However, every child’s needs are different, so it should be used alongside the individual support and adaptations already provided by their school.
- Does Little Reading Wins assess children’s reading ability?
No. Little Reading Wins is primarily focused on reading engagement, confidence and attitudes, rather than formally assessing reading ability. It should not be used as a replacement for teacher assessment or statutory assessment processes.
- Will Little Reading Wins create more work for teachers?
It has been designed with teacher workload in mind. Little Reading Wins aims to make reading engagement easier to support and monitor rather than creating another lengthy system for teachers to maintain. Features such as pupil data uploads and teacher reading logs are designed to make the setup and ongoing use as straightforward as possible.
